I know the people who read my blog are interested in the subject of loss and grief. I know that people get inspiration from the fact that I have suffered some of the worst of these, and I am still alive. I get that inspiration from others as well, and so I thought I’d like to share with you some of the things that have helped me over the years. Music is the greatest healer, as my friend Chris, who lost her 17-year old daughter Tricia in a car accident, keeps saying. Maybe not everything that speaks to me will speak to you, but perhaps it will, and perhaps it will help. So I will post some videos and tell you how they speak to me, and some book reviews as well. Feel free to send me your suggestions also!
Here is the first:
This is a video of the song “Why” by Annie Lennox. I think this is a beautiful song, but the lyrics that speak to me come towards the end:
This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I’ll never tread
These are the dreams I’ll dream instead
These are the words of hope. When you are faced with loss, there is so much bundled up with it. It is an entire future you lose, a whole story. It is all the big things, and all the little things. You know, when you love somebody there are all the little things you love about them — their smile, their hands, the way the sun shines through their hair, whatever it may be, and somehow it is really achingly hard to have all those little things taken away when they are gone from your life.
But, once again, if you put down one story in your life, it means you will be picking up another. If you do not walk down a particular path, it means there is another path you will be walking. If your dream ends, dream another. Mourn for what you have lost, but don’t forget to take courage in your future, and don’t forget to nurture yourself and your (new) dreams.
This is how we keep living.
